Emmy Smela (she/her) was born and raised in New York City. Her interest in the environment sparked early on, and found the harsh reality of living in one of the largest cities in the world only amplified her craving for a simpler way of life.
Emmy had her first farming season at age 19 on a spiritual community and farm in Loveland, Colorado. This experience had a profound effect on her. She found the healing effects farming had on both her person, and the community at large was palpable. This sprouted what she likes to call “her long-term love affair with farming”.
From this first season, Emmy spent the next 10 years in the local food and agriculture world of Eastern MA. She started off by running one of the largest farmers markets in Boston, and then working her way up to managerial roles on large nonprofit and for-profit farms. She has also blossomed into a thriving artist, and hopes to make creative classes a component of the farm’s future. With each role she has learned more about the best way to manage a team, how to leave room for community building even when you’re tired, and of course, how to create a sustainable, and profitable relationship with the land you are stewarding.

Why Little Light?
Little Light Farm was inspired by the song “This Little Light of Mine” and the concept that nurturing and caring for ourselves and our community only brightens the light we all carry. By feeding ourselves good food, caring for the planet, and loving our neighbor, we collectively grow brighter.
